Carolyn (Butts)
Swickard
July 23, 1941 – July 23, 2023
Carolyn (Butts) Swickard was born July 23, 1941, and passed away at home on July 23, 2023. She was 82 years old. Carolyn was a graduate of Garfield High School, class of 1959. She is survived by her husband, William E Swickard, Jr., her sister, Judith Ann (Butts) England, and her children, Dr. Jay (Terry) Stigdon, Jeff (Melissa) Stigdon, and Amy (Kevin) Rogers. She has four grandchildren: Michael Johnson, Joshua Stigdon, Zoë Stigdon, Breanna Rogers; and one great-granddaughter, Charlie Ruth Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest Robert Butts and Mary Mae Butts (Rudé).
Carolyn worked as a medical transcriptionist, but it is more appropriate to describe her as an artist. She took piano lessons as a child and went on to teach herself how to oil paint, to be a stained-glass glazier, to crochet, quilt, and scrapbook. She imparted a love of music and the arts to her children, and her paintings were featured in several galleries. Carolyn loved to be on the move. She enjoyed fishing, camping, and traveling. She moved her family to various places in Michigan, Illinois, Arizona, and Washington State, and on a few occasions moved from one home to one next door or across the street. Despite being able to cook only pancakes when she was first married, Carolyn became a resourceful and excellent cook. She cherished her friends and family and was generous to a fault. Carolyn loved helping and serving others. She organized and participated in many craft fairs and was a life member of the Women's Auxiliary to the West Terre Haute chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Visitation will be Saturday August 5, 2023 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm in DeBaun Springhill Chapel with funeral services starting at 1:00 pm in the funeral home with Carolyn's son Dr. Jay Stigdon officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Roselawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that you make a charitable donation to the VFW or other veteran-affiliated organization. Online condolences may be left at www.debaunfuneralhomes.com
