Obituary

Betty Mae Gummere, 93 of Terre Haute, passed away on Thursday, August 4, 2016. She was born in Terre Haute on July 22, 1923 to Raymond E. Bentz and Lillian Burman Bentz. She attended Honey Creek High School and married her high school sweetheart, Paul G. "Bud" Gummere in July of 1940 and he preceded her in death in February 0f 1997. Betty was a loving mother and a blessing to her children. A perfect description of mother, was always putting the needs of others before her own. Her cheerful attitude, strength of character and positive outlook on life were amazing, and she was an inspiration to all who knew and loved her. Betty is survived by her daughter Carole Ann Ewing and son-in-law Tom, and son Paul Michael Gummere and daughter-in-law Liz. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Lori Fox, Greg Ewing (Kelly), Dan Gummere (Angie), Christopher Gummere (Wendy), and Toni Collier (John). In addition, she is survived by ten great grandchildren: Caroline, Chloe, Abby, Matthew, Noah, Rachelle, Hope, Jared, Leah, and Ben, and three great great grandchildren, Ashlyn, Jairus, and Emonie. Other survivors include a brother, Ray Bentz of Arizona and a special sister-in-law Dorothy Bentz also of Arizona. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, sister-in-law Joy Gummere Turner (and her husband John Turner), and a special friend, Warren Smith. She was a member of the Sweet Adeline's Red Hat Society, Maryland Home Ec Club (50 years), and Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church. She enjoyed her friends Clarena, Laura, and Georgette, as well as playing the card game Hand and Foot. Funeral services will be held at DeBaun Springhill Chapel on Sunday, August 7, 2016 at 2:00 PM, with Pastor Rick Swan officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for Saturday, August 6, 2016 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, in her memory.
