Bertha Hilbert Whitkanack, 98, of Prairie Creek passed away Thursday August 27, 2015 at 2:05 am in Westridge Health Care Center. She worked as a custodian for the Vigo County School Corporation for 22 years. Bertha was born December 2, 1916 in Clark County, Illinois to William Hilbert and Daisy (Simmons) Hilbert. She is survived by a son, Walter David Whitkanack and his wife (Lois) of Prairie Creek; grandchildren, Debra Vaughn and her husband Bruce, Shirley Wright and her husband Richard, Monica Deanne Hayhurst and her husband Harvey, Ronald Joe shields and his wife Cindy, Troy Whitkanack and his wife Linda, and Lilly Whitkanack; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren and a special step-great granddaughter, Jayme Koester. Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gilbert "Dock" Whitkanack, who died March 15, 1982, a daughter, Marva Sue Shields, a grandson, Gary Whitkanack, and 3 sisters, Katie Greenwell, Eliza Hilbert, and Ellen Johnson. She was a member of Church of Living Faith, Prairie Creek Home Economics Club, Farm Bureau, Republican Club, where she was Woman of the Year, and the Mothers of WW II Prairie Creek Unit #95. Visitation will be Sunday August 30, 2015 from 4:00 until 8:00 pm in DeBaun Funeral Homes, Springhill chapel, 85 E. Springhill Dr. with funeral services on Monday August 31, 2015 at 1:00 pm in the funeral home with Glenn Bussa officiating. Burial will be in Darwin Cemetery.
