Naia Lou Lawson, 88, of Terre Haute, passed away Friday, September 7, 2018, at 2:00 pm at the Gibson Family Center for Hospice Care. She was an elementary school teacher in Vigo County for over four decades after beginning her career in Casey, Illinois. She was born November 5, 1929, in Terre Haute to Daniel Chopson and Hazel (Churchill) Chopson. Naia is survived by what she described as her "greatest joy," her two sons, Robert H. Lawson, Jr. (Veronica “Ronni”) and John D. Lawson (Leah), both of Terre Haute; sister, Becky Neff (Dave) of Terre Haute; brother, Daniel Chopson of San Diego; grandchildren, Carter Lawson and Meghan Degennaro; great-grandchildren, Keira Degennaro, Sophia Degennaro, and Cora Pell; sister-in-law, Mary Lou Chopson of Sullivan; and her beloved cat, Ike. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Lawson, who died July 31, 2006; grandson, Robert H. Lawson III; sister, Linda Benson; and brother, Franklin Chopson. She was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association, and a Democrat Precinct Committeeperson for many years. She enjoyed quilting and making blankets, and along with her husband, was an avid auto racing fan, especially IndyCar and NASCAR. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and longtime family friend Kim Danner and her husband, Guy. Visitation will be Sunday, September 23, 2018, from 1:00 until 3:00 pm in DeBaun Springhill Chapel with a Celebration of Life at 3:00 pm in the funeral home.
