Melvin Ray Gastineau, 84, of Terre Haute passed away in IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis on August 8, 2018. He was born on August 12, 1933 to Luther Lester Paul Gastineau and Tressie (Brewer) Gastineau. Melvin is preceded in death by both parents; Sisters Jeanette Slaughter-Kohl and Juanita Gastineau as well as a grandchild Olivia Rose Gastineau. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Venita Gastineau; three sons Jeffery Gastineau (Carla) Douglas Gastineau and John Wesley Gastineau (Rhonda); grandchildren Heather Morgan (Andy) Noah Gastineau and Zoey Gastineau; and three great-grandchildren Madison, Lily, and Aubrey Morgan. Melvin spent over 30 years teaching Special education, mostly working for Vigo County School Corporation including Woodrow Wilson and South Vigo High School. He was a member of the Mended Hearts. He was also a member of The First Baptist Church, Vigo County Retired Teachers, and the National Teacher’s Association. He was an avid St Louis Cardinals fan. Melvin also worked on receiving his pilot’s license and enjoyed flying. Visitation for Melvin will be held at First Baptist Church of Terre Haute, 4701 E. Poplar St., Terre Haute on Tuesday August 14 from 12-2:00 PM with services starting at 2:00 PM Pastor Bernard Jackson will be officiating.
