Wayne LeRoy Myers
, 84, of Terre Haute died Sunday January 10, 2010 at 2:50 PM in his residence. He had worked at Pfizer for 32 years retiring in 1983. Wayne was born August 11, 1925 in Terre Haute to Raymond E. Myers and Sadie (Sparks) Myers. He is survived by his wife Phyllis (Moore) Myers whom he married June 8, 1985, a daughter: Elaine Roetter and her daughter Kirsten “Chicky” Roetter both of Danville, IN; a son: Terry Wayne Myers of Terre Haute and his daughters: Whitney Vorndron and Halee Myers; 2 brothers: William “Bill” Myers and his wife Louise of Prairieton, IN and Fred Myers and his wife Peggy of Riley, IN and several nieces and nephews. Wayne and Don Coverstone leased the Terre Haute Softball Stadium at 1st and Farrington in October 1963 and league play started there in the spring of 1964. In 1976 he established the Terre Haute Softball Hall of Fame. He was a member of the A.S.A. Hall of Fame, the Indianapolis A.S.A. Hall of Fame, the Larry Birds Wabash Valley Hall of Fame, and the National A.S.A. Hall of Fame. He was also an honorary member of the Texas, Nebraska, and Washington DC A.S.A. Hall of Fames, Wayne served as President of Amateur Softball Association of America in 1995 and 1996 and he threw out the first pitch at the first Women’s Fast Pitch Softball Game at the 1996 Olympics in Columbus, GA. Since 1976 he has been the Indiana A.S.A. Commissioner. He was on the Indiana Softball Championship team in 1949 for American Legion Post 40 in the Indiana State American Legion Tournament. In 1982 he spoke to the Indiana House of Representatives and the Indian Senate on Softball. He received the Sagamor of the Wabash Valley by then Governor Evan Bayh. He managed the Terre Haute American Little League to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA in 1961. Wayne was a graduate of Honey Creek High School and served in the US. Navy during WW II. He was a member of American Legion Post #346, Riley Masonic Lodge #390 F & AM, 33rd degree member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, the Zorah Shrine, Order of the Eastern Star-Riley #22, Moose Lodge #1009, and the Indiana Sheriffs Association. Funeral services will be Friday January 15, 2010 at 1:00 PM in DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Dr., with Pastor Harold Throckmartin officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park with military honors provided by American Legion Post #346. Visitation will be Thursday January 14, 2010 from 2:00 until 8:00 PM in the funeral home and again on Friday from 11:00 Am until service time. If friends so desire the family has suggested that memorial contributions may be made to either the Shriners Hospital for Children, American Cancer Society, or VistaCare Hospice. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home.

Derek and I have always had great respect for Wayne and you, Phyllis. Please accept our sincere sympathy and condolences. Wayne was the best thing to ever happen to ASA softball in Indiana and Nationally. I hope everone in the organization will carry on his great work and vision. God has certainly gained a fantastic organizer, and player for his team. He will be greatly missed by all. Your in our prayers, Jim & Derek Brading.

To the Phyllis and family. Derek and I have always had great respect for Wayne and you. Wayne’s tireless energy and devotion to the ASA in Indiana and the Nation has contributed to it’s continuing greatness over the last several years. I hope Wayne’s tradition will continue.
