Mother will be remembered as a wonderful mother that instilled in each of her children to achieve all that we could and taught us valuable morals, always made sure that each of us knew we were loved unconditionally, and forever would have her love, and to hold our memories close to our hearts. Grandchildren, Jennifer Siner Singh (Manny) of Naperville, IL, Andrew Siner (Sarah) of Crystal Lake, IL, Jo Ellen Withem of Terre Haute, Samantha Biddle Lichti (Jason) of Indianapolis, AJ Dinkel of Terre Haute. Great grandchildren, Eli and Evey Cunning of Terre Haute, Evan and Madeline Singh of Naperville, IL, a son-in-law, Robert Siner of Algonquin, IL as well as several nieces, nephews and special friends.

Connie was born May 12, 1931 in Huron, South Dakota, to C.H. and Ruth Christiansen. After graduating from Huron College she taught English and Choral Music in Spencer and Huron, SD. She married Curtis Winkle in 1954, and following a year in Panama where her husband was serving in the Army, she taught high school English and directed drama productions in Pierre and Hase, SD. Connie became a full-time homemaker and, with her husband, raised five children. The family homesteaded in Terre Haute’s Edgewood Grove in 1966. In 1979, Connie took a position as Library Assistant at Indiana State University where her major responsibility was coordinating the Reserve desk. She retired in 1996.

Connie’s activities and interests were centered on her family, music, writing and the theater. She participated in theater activities with the faculty wives of the University of Minnesota. In Terre Haute she was a long-time parishioner and member of the choir at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church and served on the vestry. She also sang in the Terre Haute Chorale Society and Sweet Adeline’s, which she directed for one year. Connie was very active in theater activities in the community including the Historical Society, Indiana State University and The Community Theatre of Terre Haute. She was particularly active in Community Theatre where she served on the Board of Directors and numerous committees, provided backstage and box office support and memorably performed as an actress in eighteen plays between the years 1967 to 1993. Connie also enjoyed painting and had many of her paintings on display at Community Theatre in 1987. Connie never met a pun she did not like and received great pleasure in writing witty poems and parodies for family and close friends’ special events. A stickler for correct grammar and punctuation, she is no doubt “tisk-tisking” her own obituary for the errors we who love her have somehow let slip.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Curtis A. Winkle, her five children-Curtis R. (Ken Martin) of Chicago IL, Christi Fenton (Patrick Sheehan) of Terre Haute, Clarke (Debbie) of St. Charles MO, Carter (Miguel Suarez) of Miami Shores, FL, Caryl Lynn Deelo (Randy) of St. Louis MO, her ten grandchildren and her brother, Clarke Christiansen (Shirley) of Huron SD.

Services will be officiated by the Rev. Joseph H. Chillington at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church on Saturday, June 9th at 11 a.m. Her ashes will be scattered in The Mabley Garden at St. Stephen’s immediately after the service.

Her family will meet with friends at 10 a.m. in the Cloister Room of St. Stephen’s before the service. Immediately following the service, members of St. Stephen’s will provide a reception for family and friends.

DeBaun Springhill Chapel, 85 E. Springhill Drive, has been entrusted with making arrangements

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested for St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, The Community Theatre of Terre Haute or the Alzheimer’s Association.
